Who Did Cain Marry?

One of the most oft-repeated accusations against the word of God is found in this question, “Who did Cain marry?”

The accusation goes like this:

1. Cain got married.

2. There were no women other than close relatives to marry.

3. Cain could only have married a close relative.

4. This would be “incest”.

5. This proves the Bible HAS to be in error, contradicting laws against such incest.

The answer to this accusation is simple:

Cain was a liar and a murderer!! For Cain to marry a close relative was HARDLY a stretch. If he could kill his own brother, don’t you think he would have little problem marrying a close relative, IF such were against the law?? He may even have forced marriage on an unsuspecting young lady. Would rape or forced marriage be too hard to imagine, coming from humanity’s first murderer??

Even beyond this possibility, the fact is that if Cain “turned over a new leaf” and wanted to be honorable, he could have married a niece or even a cousin. As a matter of fact, in a day when men typically lived to be 900 years old, Cain could have married a third of fourth cousin. And that’s not even considered illegal or improper today!

And even if Cain had married someone more closely related, it’s a mute point. Marrying close relatives was not outlawed by God for a couple of thousand years after Cain, when He gave the law to Moses (Deuteronomy 27:22). And let’s not forget that Cain was a lawbreaker. It’s very unlikely he CARED what was right or wrong. Cain wanted a wife and children and there is little doubt that this lying murderer would have gotten what he wanted, one way or another.
